Final Project Status Update

So far, I have just begun deep diving for sources regarding the final project. My project is focusing on literary texts that depict a defiant female protagonist(specifically women of color). After having my meeting with Michelle, I realized that I need to do a deeper dive and have an open mind when looking into sources, specifically when finding my primary sources. I have found a decent amount of secondary sources, but they are not as varied as I would like them to be regarding having diverse locations and backgrounds within a vast time period. I definitely need to use different keywords when searching for sources because I tend to find the same ones, but if I add new keywords, I know that I will find good sources that will assist me in my project. I also definitely need to make an appointment with kelci so she can help me in my research and my searching process. One text that I am definitely going to use as a primary source is a novel named Sula by Toni Morrison. Toni Morrision is an excellent author and I am very excited to learn more about the female protagonist in this novel and connect them to other novels with a female protagonist. One thing that was suggested to me was to use synonyms of defiance and to make the synonyms more subtle relating to texts because not all forms of defiance are bold and apparent. Some synonyms to this include rebellion, feminism, or rebellion, so I definitely need to switch up my research methods and look out for new key words.

  1. I too have found many secondary sources but they do not vary in time and locations as much as I would like them too. I plan to use your idea of varying the keywords used when searching. I think this will help to make each successive search more precise.

  2. I appreciate the advice on using synonyms of our topic in the search for sources; I am struggling to find primary sources, and will definitely use this tactic!

  3. I just read Sula a couple months ago-- it still sticks with me now, it's just one of those books that you start to see coming up in your daily life. I look forward to seeing your final project!

  4. Im hoping different keywords will help me too with my sources. It has been really hard for me to find sources that are broad in the sense that they cover different periods of time and locations too.

  5. I am also doing female rebellion against gender norms/roles! One thing that has really helped me is constantly changing my keywords. If you don't find anything in the databases, another place that Kelci and I found that could be useful is google scholar. You may not necessarily find your primary sources here but you will be able to find secondary sources that could lead you to primary sources.
