Sunja's Relationship with Hansu and Isak

Although Hansu and Isak both have different relationships with Sunja, while reading, I could definitely tell who Sunja truly likes more and who she wants to be with. Both men differ from each other in different ways, but Hansu is on the wealthier side and he is very powerful, but he is seen as a hero to Sunja due to him saving her from the high schoolers. When Sunja speaks about Hansu, she speaks in a manner that shows her appreciation and affection towards him, but when she speaks about him there is a sense of love and adoration that is not present when she speaks about Isak. In the novel I believe it mentions that when Sunja is with Hansu, she feels like time goes by too quickly which shows the deep connection they have. On the other hand, Isak is a bit more basic and he does not cause issues, but he is seen as a stereotypical husband that does not invoke feelings from his wife, creating an almost bland marriage. With Isak, it seems like Sunja only loved him because she is his wife, but it doesn't seem like she truly loves him or has real feelings for him. Over time, I believe Sunja will end up being with Hansu simply because she is happier with him and has strong feelings for him, instead of staying with Isak due to her obligation. As I continue reading, I will continue to note changes in relationships between them and note large changes in each of their interactions over the course of the novel.

  1. Maybe that was what Caroline Kennedy was referring to when she labeled Hansu 'a romantic hero.' Prior to reading your post, I could not understand why she would call Hansu any kind of hero, but it does make sense that it could be because he saved her from being targeted by the Japanese students. Regardless of how much I do not want it to happen, I do agree that Sunja may end up with Hansu for some time. I am curious to know when Hansu will show up to meet his son.

    1. I also think that Sunja ending up with Hansu is a possibility that I do not appreciate. Personally, if that were to happen, I would think that it's weird how Sunja's emotions feel static, as, in that scenario, she would be unable to get over Hansu who had previously wronged her beyond words' ability to describe. In the same vein, she would also be unable to develop feelings towards Isak, which is a lot more understandable being that adoration can't be forced, but it wouldn't make her feel like a dynamic character by any means.
